Thoughts on writing Christmas Cards
December is here and the weather has taken a turn for the worse in much of the country. I have made progress in the garden. All the fallen leaves have now been collected. Some will make leaf mould and the rest have gone to the recycling centre, where they will end up as compost. I have also sown my broad beans.
Yesterday, I sat down to write my Christmas cards. It’s along job and a bit of a chore, also quite expensive these days to send them by post. But it is very worthwhile. I like to think about each recipient, especially those whom I have not seen for a long time. I often write a little message in each card.
Some things which amused me this year were the quirky or charming house or street names in some of the addresses. Here’s a sample: -
Toadpit Lane; Cotters Close; Gillibrand Walks; Quetta; Farriers Court; Nags Head Hill; Gwel an Garrek; Tiddy Close; Crakenhall; Fig Tree Barn.
(The 7th on my list may not sound unusual to Cornish speakers.)
It is also nice to receive Christmas cards, which sometimes contain a bit of news or a round robin.
Talking of robins, we always used to count the cards we got with robins on them to decide whether it was “a good robin Christmas”.
Season’s Greetings to all.
