I am gradually recovering from knee replacement surgery on my left knee. Progress has been slower than with my other knee, which was the subject of surgery last September. The surgeon had more work to do on the left knee, which had been wrecked by arthritis over many years.
I am now five weeks from the operation and getting better, especially with mobility. I still have to do physiotherapy exercises 3 or 4 times per day and have to rest on my bed for 90 minutes twice a day to help the healing process. It is okay if I go to sleep on these occasions. The exercises are to enable my knee to straighten and to bend further. For pain management I am still on Codeine, which is a depressant. Along with resting during the day, when I have a hundred and one things to do, we have a recipe for gloom.
As always, André Rieu comes to the rescue with his fine and joyous music-making. Currently I am particularly enjoying the contributions for his soprano soloist, Anna Majchrzak, with her wonderful voice and technique. In André’s large venues she performs powerful and moving popular songs and arias. She doesn’t just sing these songs but seems to own them.
Researching Anna on YouTube, I find that she is a versatile singer, at home with opera, operetta, lieder, musicals and popular numbers. In a Dutch TV programme in 2020, Anna sang some carols in duets with a handsome baritone. Despite the language barrier in the case of some of the carols, these were performances not to be missed by the fans of Anna or anyone who enjoys fabulous singing. It can be found by searching (take a deep breath- Dutch words about to appear) Kerstconcert: Volkserstzang Zwijndrecht 2020.
Must stop now: it’s 10.30 am. Time for exercises and then lying down, until disturbed by a phone call (scam or genuine) or a knock on the door or some other disturbance. Later on, hope to get in some gardening, piano playing or listening to music.
