New Year’s Resolutions
I have come generally to dislike New Year’s resolutions, and am trying to work out why.
They might be: to lose weight, to quit smoking, to take more exercise, to perform better at work or in school, to give up alcohol in January, to do some charity work, or to visit exotic places like the Joneses in our street.
All these are associated with a sense of guilt or failure: e.g. I am too fat, lazy, boring, uncaring and get drunk. But remember no-one is perfect.
Giving up smoking or losing weight are worthy ambitions but both are tough. Smoking is an addiction and you would need to plan how to do it. I think weight loss should be a whole year project, avoiding crash diets and quick fixes. Maybe aim to lose two stone over twelve months.
A nice vague resolution might be to do some act of kindness to another person every day. That might help the world to be a better place, but remember to be kind to yourself as well. Some people like to beat themselves up when anything goes wrong.
If you must make a resolution, I would suggest a positive one, which (depending on time and finance) might be: learn to play the guitar, write a novel, visit family abroad, take up golf, or change to a vegetarian or vegan diet.
If it is something you feel motivated to do, you will have more chance of success. With new focus or interest in life, maybe some of the perceived faults will just fall away. You can’t eat crisps and play the guitar at the same time.
My resolution this year is a rather modest: EMF—eat more fruit.I tend to buy fruit but forget to eat it while it is fresh. When it looks past its best, I don’t fancy it. It will have to be EMF on the day of purchase or the next day.
If you make a resolution, I hope you will succeed. Whatever you do, I hope you will have a happy time in 2024.
