Well, the Women’s Euros are over and there will be many
memorable moments. One of the key players was Chloe Kelly, a genuine team
player and one for the big moments in big matches. Her amazing efforts will
stick in the memory
I recall her speaking to the media after the victory in the final. I can’t
recall her exact words but she thanked those who had put her down , as this
gave her the incentive to move to Arsenal, so was now a Champion’s League
winner and a double Euros winner. She of course scored the winning goal in 2022
and 2025. Her reference was seemingly to Manchester City where she rarely was
asked to play.
This reminded me of a very famous speech by the distinguished actress and
singer Julie Andrews when she was awarded a Golden Globe for her part in the
film “Mary Poppins”. The back ground to this was that Julie had starred in “My
Fair Lady” on Broadway and in the West End, which was a smash hit and run for
many shows. Warner Brothers decided to make a film of this musical and signed
up Julie’s co-star, Rex Harrison but not Julie. They thought she did not have a
profile as a film star. Instead they chose Audrey Hepburn for the part, as she
was one of the biggest film stars of the day. But she was not a singer and she
would have to mime to most of the songs. Audrey did not want the part as she
felt it was Julie’s, and she was not allowed to sing. She decided to accept it
as it was made clear to her that they did not want Julie and if she turned it
down there were other choices for them for the part.
Walt Disney had seen Julie in Camelot on Broadway and thought she was perfect
for “Mary Poppins”, a new film involving cartoon and human characters. She got
the part and the film was a huge box-office success. Julie won a Golden Globe
and the Oscar for best actress for that film.
At her speech on receiving the Golden Globe, where Jack Warner and Audrey
Hepburn were present, Julie ended her speech, “And finally, my thanks to a man
who made a wonderful film and who made all this possible”. Everyone knew she meant
Jack Warner, who had turned her down. Otherwise she would have missed out on
“Mary Poppins”. Jack Warner’s star, Audrey Hepburn, was not even nominated for
her role in “My Fair Lady”.
The takeaway from Chloe and Julie is that is you turn down a talented woman you
might live to regret it. History has a way of repeating itself.
