Friday the 13th in Newton Abbot
Yesterday was Friday the 13th of October. Was something nasty going to happen to someone? The answer was “Yes”. I do not know the name of the unfortunate person or what happened or where it happened. But I felt sure that something nasty occurred that day.
In the evening I was getting my supper ready. A casserole of chicken and mushrooms was simmering away in the oven and I was about to boil some rice to go with it. I was listening to the six o’clock news on the radio, when my listening was disturbed by loud noises from above.
I guessed that the din was coming from a helicopter. Perhaps another inmate had waltzed away from Channings Wood Open Prison, and the Police were looking for him. The noise got louder and louder. I could not see anything from my window and so I went out to take a look.
I saw a red helicopter going back and forth and gradually descending. I knew it to be the Devon Air Ambulance. It was now so low that I thought it might be trying to land on my lawn. I had mowed it earlier in the week and cleared leaves, so that it would have been neat and tidy for the crew. But the aircraft flew just above the large Monterey Pine at No 9 and proceeded to land on Forde Park. This had to be done with great care as there were still people on the park, including dog walkers, and it was getting dark. The helicopter was very noisy and its lights were very bright. People would surely have seen and heard it.
It landed safely and then I heard the sound of a siren and saw flashing blue lights as an ambulance entered our road. It found the best place to stop and there was much activity as the crews attended to the patient. I did not look any more, as I respected the privacy of those involved. I guess that some poor person probably was involved in a motor accident and needed to go without delay to the main hospital in Plymouth. We will probably be told more in next week’s Mid Devon Advertiser. In the meantime my wish is for a speedy recovery for the unfortunate patient.
