I have recently had knee replacement surgery on my other
knee. The one that was replaced in September is doing very well, and I am
hopeful for this latest one. The operation was carried out at an excellent
private hospital (which also does NHS work). My operated leg is still painful
when I put weight on it, but is doing well otherwise.
As readers will know, I am a fan of André Rieu and his orchestra. When I was in
bed in my room on the evening of the day of the op, having had an excellent
dinner, I switch on the TV, and tried Sky Arts, which just happened to be
showing André’s 2003 concert in the historic city of Cortona in Italy. This
open-air event took place in a large central piazza surrounded by tall medieval
buildings and packed with enthusiastic Italians. They all seemed to know the
tunes and the lyrics to the operatic arias being played. It was a brilliant
concert and lasted until about 10.00 pm, when the nurses arrived to give me my
last tablets for the day.
I have heard André claim that, when patients in hospital watch his videos, they
immediately get better. During the two hours plus of the concert, I was unaware
of any pain in my battered knee, and that was on the very evening of the op.
Perhaps André is right.
Next morning, while I was waiting for a physio to get me walking, I was
watching the TV, which was showing another André video: the 2008 concert in the
magnificent opera house in Dresden. This was another brilliant concert. I had
to leave the room before Mirusia got to sing her solo, in order to walk slowly
up and down corridors on a walking frame and then on crutches. I was glad to
get back to watch the last part of the concert.
On the evening of that day, I put on the TV,and guess what! It was another of
my favourites. The Lionesses were playing a World Cup qualifier against the
brilliant Spanish women and won. Again I was unaware of any pain, even after my
earlier efforts in walking.
On the following day, as I was awaiting the arrival of my lift home, I put on
the TV, which was showing André’s 2023 DVD “Love is All Around”. It got me
in the right frame of mind to go home.
With the good care I received in the hospital and with the TV contributions, I
felt that love was indeed all around. Someone was looking after my
interests.
